Campaigners for a new sports facility are hoping for more time to overcome objections to it.

Hatfield Peverel Football Club had hoped to build a new clubhouse, pavilion, indoor sports hall and changing rooms, along with pitch lighting and an all-weather pitch.

Its members feared they would again have to withdraw the proposals after planning officers recommended the plans for refusal.

But following consultation with councillors on the Witham area committee, the club is hopeful next month's meeting of the committee can defer considering the plans until the objections are overcome.

The planning officers said the scheme would lead to an unacceptable increase in traffic on narrow country lanes and that the appearance of the proposed clubhouse and extent of floodlighting would be unacceptable in the rural location.

The £2 million plan had the full backing of Hatfield Peverel Parish Council along with 679 residents who signed a petition in support of it.

But 116 objections have also been made and Wickham Bishops Parish Council opposes the scheme as unsuitable for the rural location.
