Police swooped on a popular mid-Essex nightspot as a part of a crack down on under-age binge drinking.

But they found no under-18s at Yates Wine Lodge in Chelmsford when they turned up unannounced on Friday night.

Jim Woodcock, manager of the Yates, said he was pleased the venue got the all-clear. He said about three riot vans containing police officers arrived at about 9.20pm in a high-profile operation.

Mr Woodcock said: "They came in and checked the ages of the customers. Of the 143 we had in at the time, none were found to be drinking underage. Two did not have identity on them and we are waiting back to hear but obviously are pleased with the situation.

"To have under-age drinkers in the bar would have been very serious and could have resulted in us being closed down."

Mr Woodcock said door staff did check for ID with proof of age, which was usually either a passport or driving licence.

Martin Reed, Chelmsford police's licensing officer, said this was the first of such visits which would take place at late-night drinking establishments in the town.
