A Braintree Town footballer was subject to racist abuse during a match, it has been alleged.

The non-league club have called for a Football Association (FA) investigation. It comes after racial taunts were heard during their Ryman League game on Saturday against Wealdstone

It is believed the chants were directed at captain Ollie Adedeji during the heated premier division away clash, which Town won 4-2.

After the game, Wealdstone fans were reported to the FA by match referee Stephen Daly for racial misconduct.

Today, Braintree chairman Lee Harding said that his club would be sending a letter to the Football Association this week requesting an investigation.

But because of the sensitive nature of the allegations, Mr Harding said the club was not in a position to comment in detail at this stage and that the player would also be unavailable for comment.

A statement from Wealdstone Football Club said: "The club are taking this report extremely seriously and wish to state publicly our complete shock at this allegation, whilst at the same time fully apologising to the Braintree Town player at who, it is alleged, the comments were aimed.

"We confirm that every effort is being taken to investigate these allegations, and if someone is identified as having used racially offensive comments, then the club will use the heaviest sanctions available."
