A long-running battle to secure vital road safety measures at a new school looks set to be resolved.

But it has taken an unprecedented step of one council department taking enforcement action against another to finally tackle the issue.

The new Harwich Primary School buildings were opened last May. But there were concerns about the access road to the site and other issues - which are still to be sorted out.

Essex county councillor Les Double (Lab, Harwich) said it was a ridiculous situation and he was very unhappy about it.

"This is a new purpose-built facility and yet the road safety aspects are still unresolved," he said.

Now members of the development and regulation committee at County Hall are expected to take action at their meeting on Friday.

They will give colleagues in education until March 31 to ensure the necessary works are carried out.

Mr Double said it was not the responsibility of the developer as it was the county council which applied for planning permission and managed the scheme.

"It is county council which has not rectified this and we now have the unprecedented step of one department taking enforcement action against another," he said.
