A man fed up with being ripped off by drug dealers has admitted cultivating and possessing cannabis worth between £800 and £1,000.

Chelmsford Magistrates' Court heard yesterday how Benjamin Smith, 27, of Saxon Bank, Braintree, was arrested on October 31 last year following a search of his home.

The court heard how Smith had 15 immature cannabis plants, amounting to 194 grams of the class C drug, and 2.79 grams of cannabis resin.

Prosecutor Denise Holland said: "At about 2.40am officers had cause to go to the defendant's home address and make a search of the property.

"In the spare bedroom there was a drugs set-up, with the room covered wall to wall in foil. There was a ventilation system and a watering system. The master bedroom was then checked and the wardrobe had lights inside it."

Smith was arrested and during interview gave full admissions to cultivating cannabis and possessing the drug, the court heard.

Mrs Holland added: "He said he was sick of being ripped off by drug dealers so decided to make it himself. He said he bought the equipment from a friend three months previously and had his first harvest three weeks before being arrested."

Neil King, mitigating, said it clearly was a production for personal use.

The case was adjourned for reports.
