An ambitious bid is under way to entice Radio One back to Tendring's sunshine coast.

Tourist bosses were dismayed when the BBC pulled the plug on the popular crowd-pulling Clacton roadshow eight years ago. It scrapped them in favour of mini-pop festivals at larger towns and cities around the country.

But traders in Clacton are hoping to join forces with Tendring Council in the hope of getting the radio station to reconsider the resort as a future venue.

Pierre Oxley, chairman of Clacton Chamber of Trade, said: "The last time Radio One came down to Clacton was 1997 and then there was a major switch in emphasis.

"However, I feel the BBC does seem to be putting greater emphasis on regional programmes and events and may like to look at the matter again."

Mr Oxley said he had contacted BBC bosses and was waiting for a reply.

A spokesman for Radio One said: "The roadshows have not existed for quite a few years. We take different kinds of events all over the country and there are no plans at present to come back to Clacton."
