Basildon Crown Court heard Dicker, 36, "lost it" when his mother called him stupid as he hung pictures at their home in Craigfield Avenue, Great Clacton, on Jaunary 29, 2003.

The court heard injuries to former Colchester traffic warden Jean Dicker, 58, were so bad she had brain damage and the wounds to her head exposed the cranial bone.

The wounds were caused by repeated blows from a hammer and stamping with a foot on her head.

Dicker, formerly of Harwich Road, Colchester, then went out to gain an alibi before returning and calling police, having "discovered" his mother's battered body.

Dicker admitted her murder and was yesterday jailed for life, with a minimum term of 13 years.

Speaking after the hearing, sister Tracy Kinton, of Colchester, said: "Life is full of surprises and if anyone asked me could my brother kill someone my answer would be no. He deserves his sentence but this won't bring mum back."
