A man has been jailed for four months after drinking 25 pints of lager before driving.

Kevin Gill, 35, of Stalin Road, was involved in a crash near his home on Sunday, Colchester Magistrates' Court heard.

Maria Jabati, prosecuting, said police were called to the scene and found Gill in the driver's seat of a Citroen car which had been involved in the collision. Gill smelled of alcohol and a roadside breath test was positive, she said.

He was taken to Colchester police station, and a second test showed he had 155mcg of alcohol in 100ml of breath. The legal limit is 35mcg.

In a police interview, he admitted he had drunk one pint on that day, but the previous night he said he'd had 25 pints of lager. Gill told officers he had a drink problem. In court, he admitted a charge of driving with excess alcohol.

Mark Francis, mitigating, said his client was remorseful and acknowledged he had quite a serious problem with alcohol. He said Gill had made efforts to overcome his problems.

Gill relapsed at Christmas, the Bench heard, and at the time of the offence was on a community rehabilitation order.

Magistrates told Gill: "This reading was extremely high and you have previous convictions for similar offences. Other sentences haven't prevented you from reoffending there is no alternative to custody."

He was jailed for four months and disqualified from driving for five years.
