He might have provoked a war of words between Alan Pardew and Sheffield United manager Neil Warnock, but young Mark Noble is putting a smile back on the West Ham boss's face.

The midfielder, 17, has been one of the few bright spots of a new year which has seen Hammers slip out of the play-off places.

But his combative streak riled Warnock during Saturday's FA Cup clash. "He'll have to be careful and he will need some guidance," he said.

"I thought he made one horrendous challenge that was worthy of a straight red -he won't get away with that too often in his career.

"Hopefully he will be disappointed when he sees the replay."

It was a crunching challenge on Nick Montgomery which earned Warnock's ire, and a yellow card.

But Noble's tough-tackling display was no surprise to those who have seen the teenager in the youth ranks where his all-action performances have boosted his reputation.

Pardew made a stern defence of his player, who he regards as a committed contributor to his squad.

"I think Neil's out of line to say that, but he does it regularly," he responded.

"It was a rash challenge but nothing more.

"Mark's a level-headed lad and it's a testament to him that he's playing in our first team.

"We know he's going to be a good player and we're happy with his progress."
