Provisional approval has been given to a range of measures designed to improve on-street parking in Colchester.

Richard Gower, Colchester's portfolio holder for transportation, said a review had showed there was a need to change the borough's parking controls.

He told the policy scrutiny panel last night residents would get a chance to give their views on the new proposals later this year.

He said: "We are trying to produce a coherent policy. There have been abnormalites."

Mr Gower admitted some of the proposed changes were "controversial" but were needed because of the overwhelming demand for on-street parking and the limited supply available.

John Lemon, Colchester's parking services manager, said some of the parking controls were not "appropriate" anymore.

The panel approved the changes in principle.
