Teenagers begging at Harwich port have sparked concern for ferry passengers.

British Transport Police say teenagers, aged 14 and 15, have begun begging money from passengers as they arrive at and depart from Harwich International Port.

They have stressed that the action of the youths is an offence and they are keen to stamp it out.

Acting Sgt Paul Thompson said the problem had become prevalent in the past couple of weeks and it was unpleasant for passengers.

The port building has also been targeted by vandals.

Paul Davey, spokesman for Hutchison Ports UK, which owns Harwich International Port, said: "We are aware of a problem with vandalism, but we have not been made aware there is a problem with begging. It is really a police matter."
