Colchester's first application for a 24-hour drinking licence has been made by a town centre pub.

Hoping to be open all hours - Molly Malones, in St Botolph's Circus, Colchester, wants a 24-hour licence. (43504-1)

Residents fear if it is given the go-ahead they will suffer disturbance through the night.

Molly Malones, in St Botolph's Circus, has applied to Colchester Council for the licence.

Jo Edwards, chairman of the Civic Society and the Colchester Federation of Residents' Associations, said: "Of course it will affect the town centre and could potentially affect people in suburbs and people in the country.

She added: "We are working very much in collaboration to try and see what we can do to make life bearable for residents and visitors to the town."

She said residents and visitors staying in hotels very much feared the prospect of being woken up at 4am or 5am, as well as the usual 1am or 2am which happens at the moment.

Mrs Edwards said: "We are trying to be positive and we recognise a lot has got to be done to make sure the town, and the area surrounding a pub which does go for a 24-hour licence, is fit for all and not just people who use that venue.
