An arson attack has badly damaged parts of a town centre shop.

Clacton firefighters were called at 12.30am today to a blaze at Holland and Barrett, in Pier Avenue, Clacton.

It had started after cages filled with rubbish were moved to the back of the store and set alight.

The fire melted through the store's window and spread inside the premises.

A fire service spokesman said: "We were at the scene for about one-and-a-half hours. We put the fire out from outside the building, then had to ventilate the shop.

"The storeroom was quite heavily damaged and there was a lot of smoke."

Police want witnesses to contact them on 01255 221312.
