Demolition work has begun at Basildon Police Station in preparation for a £1.7million refit of the custody cells.

Last year a report found it was the "most overcrowded and inefficient" unit in Essex and was in greatest need of "early action" to bring it up to national standards.

The new development will make Basildon one of the main custody centres in Essex and increase its cell numbers from 12 to 20.

All cells will have CCTV equipment, extra staffing such as a nurse and an evidence adviser will be taken on permanently.

The old building was criticised for poor condition, bad layout and having too few interview rooms. The single custody desk also caused delays and meant officers wasted several hours waiting for detainees.

Prisoners for Basildon are being taken to Rayleigh Police Station while the refit takes place.
