A Cafe set up to give people with learning difficulties valuable work experience is expanding with extended hours and more volunteers.

Southend Association of Voluntary Services runs the cafe at its premises in Alexandra Street, Southend, to give people with learning difficulties a taste of the working life. Because of its success, opening hours will be extended from 11.30am-2.30pm to 10am-3pm every weekday. This will also allow the number of volunteers to be increased from 12 to 15.

Cafe supervisor Janet Gordon said: "We're trying to build up the business. It's doing really well.

"We've got a lot of customers. We are trying to expand so we have more volunteers.

"Some of them move on to other cafes. Others enjoy it so much, they don't want to leave.

"It's a good way for them to mix with ordinary people in the community."
