The future of Basildon and Laindon's 80-year-old Royal British Legion club is once again under threat.
Worried members were fretting today after fears escalated they would have to find a new home now its present one had been leased out to a private company.
It is not the first time its 100-plus club members have faced an uncertain future.
The branch, based at Basildon Golf Course, is one of the largest in Essex and was forced to give up its original home in Laindon High Road after it was compulsory purchased by the Basildon Development Corporation 30 years ago.
Basildon Council has leased the golf course, in Clay Hill Lane, to private management company Jack Barker Leisure which plans to replace the club house.
Branch club project sub-committee chairman Maj Jim Hawkins, 69, told of members' fears.
He said: "Basically, we need to find a vacant building somewhere in the town to buy for ourselves."
Founded in 1921 and with more than 500,000 members nationwide, the Royal British Legion provides support to veterans of all ages and their dependants.
