When Martin Williams cycled into Rochford, he never thought he would be so glad to see his home town.
As he pedalled bruised, saddle-sore and exhausted back to his home in Wedgwood Way, it was the end of a 1,100 mile bike ride that tested his willpower to its limits.
During the journey, in which he cycled from Barcelona to Rochford, he was hit by a lorry, drenched by torrential rain, parched after running out of water, scorched by the sun and left exhausted after cycling 100 miles a day and sleeping on park benches.
He volunteered to complete the journey to add £600 to the funds being raised by school friend Kay Weir, to help build an orphanage in Kenya.
