An investigation has been launched after fears that mud removed from the boating lake at Maldon's Promenade Park could be contaminated.
Maldon District Council has admitted there is an "issue" with soil taken away during works to turn the Marine Lake into an ornamental pond.
The council today declined to explain the extent of the problem at Promenade Park.
They refused to comment on claims the soil could be toxic.
A spokesman said: "The council is aware there are issues relating to the siltation which was removed.
"As a result, the council is undertaking a range of tests and the matter will be discussed at a full council meeting on Thursday."
He stressed members of the public were not at risk from possible contamination of materials currently in a confined area at the site.
