Two potentially-lethal arrows were fired near homes in a frightening trend and police and community campaigners have warned of the dangers of people using such sports equipment irresponsibly.
The incidents happened in Wivenhoe and Braintreee.
An arrow was found embedded in the wall of a house in Beatty Gardens, Braintree. Police believe it had been fired from a building site behind the house.
Ken Rogers, of Wivenhoe Community Safety and Neighbourhood Watch Group, said a 28in metal arrow had been fired into a garden where children play in the town.
It had a sharp tip and could have caused serious injury.
Mr Rogers said he had tracked down the person who fired the arrow, and the culprit had apologised and pledged not to use it again.
He said the bow and arrow constituted an offensive weapon and warned others not to make similar mistakes.
