RESIDENTS fighting against the development of East Tilbury and Linford are planning a number of high profile protests, which may include a blockade of the A13.

Plans to oppose the planned development of the area by Thamesgate Regeneration -- which could see up to 14,000 new homes built -- were floated at a heated public meeting inside East Tilbury Village Hall on Monday night.

More than 500 residents turned up for the meeting, with many more waiting outside, as the full extent of the communities' opposition to the regeneration plans became clear.

East Tilbury councillor, Barry Palmer, stoked up passions at the meeting, saying: "We might have to resort to civil disobedience to raise the profile of our cause. I'm not advocating breaking the law but unless we stand up and be counted we will be pushed aside."

Residents put forward a number of ideas to protest against the development including a road block on the A13, a blockade on the train line and a protest inside Thamesgate's showroom at Stanford House, Princess Margaret Road.
