A woman driver had to drag her children out through a car window when a motorbike and car burst into flames after colliding.

The biker was taken to hospital in a critical condition after the collision with the car and was being operated on last night.

Both vehicles ended up burnt out after the crash in Maldon last night.

Two ambulances, a rapid response vehicle and the incident support unit manager from headquarters were sent to London Road after a number of calls to the emergency operations centre at 6.34pm.

Steve Wheaton, head of the incident support unit, said: "The two vehicles collided head on just after the bike had come round a corner.

"The force of the collision threw the rider about 30ft away from his bike. The car ended up at an angle in a ditch.

"The bike burst into flames, which set the grass verge alight. The fire spread along the verge, eventually setting fire to the car. Both vehicles were destroyed.

"Fortunately the mother and two young children who were in the car were able to get out before the fire took hold.
