Colchester United supporters' supremo Jon Burns today greeted news of the U's fixtures for the new campaign with mixed feelings.

He told the Gazette: "I'm devastated that we have to start and finish the season away from home"

The U's are at relegated Gillingham on the opening day (August 6) and must travel to newly-promoted Yeovil on the last day of the season (May 6) next year.

"What a blow," said Burns. "That's the third season on the trot that we've started away from home.

"Gillingham and Yeovil both have uncovered stands so it will be no fun for our fans if it's belting down with rain.

"But the trip to Southend United on August Bank Holiday Monday is sure to be a massive game and there'll be a mad rush for tickets for what will almost certainly be an all-ticket match.

"With any luck we'll be having plenty to cheer about by the time our home match against the Shrimpers comes around (March 4). Wouldn't it be great if the lads were heading for the play-offs at that time?"

Burns was equally upbeat about the visit of two-times former European Cup champions Nottingham Forest to Layer Road to kick-off the New Year celebrations.

He said: "It's another great Bank Holiday fixture which is sure to attract a bumper crowd.
