A BID to open a takeaway in the middle of a residential Colchester street has been withdrawn after complaints from neighbours.

An application was lodged to convert the residential property – 115 Greenstead Road – into a takeaway, restaurant or shop.

About 40 residents lodged objections, saying it could increase noise, litter and parking problems and the 11pm opening time was too late.

The applicant has withdrawn the plans and submitted a fresh application to use the building as a shop.

Susan Soormally, who represents the applicant, said: “We understand they didn’t want it. We have taken on the objections regarding takeaways and late nights.

“We have resubmitted the application for a shop that will open until 9pm.”

Kate Zepeda, who lives in Greenstead Road, said she was pleased the application has been withdrawn, but worried about the plans for a shop.

She said: “I’m against it for the same reasons – parking and noise. It’s probably going to change into something else.

“It’s a general issue with parking – there’s no room for a shop. We have Tesco at one end and a Chinese takeaway at the other.”

Mike Hogg, Lib Dem councillor for St Anne’s ward, was delighted the takeaway and restaurant application had been withdrawn, but said he would look closely at the new plans.

He added: “It’s democracy in action.

“I will view the new application with an open mind. Ultimately, I am here to represent the people who live there.”
