A LIBRARY has been forced to employ a security guard and install an extra CCTV camera because of antisocial behaviour.

Greenstead library, in Hawthorn Avenue, Colchester, now has seven security cameras in and around the building and a guard who patrols the grounds three afternoons a week.

Judith Wickenden, manager of the library, said: “We were having trouble with a group of older boys who were coming here after school. They were putting other people off coming because of their behaviour.

“We want to make the library more family-friendly after school.

“The measures are for the safety of staff as well.

“We have had cases where we have had to lock ourselves in the library and call 999.”

She said since the security guard was taken on, there was a “nicer atmosphere” and more people were using the library.

The guard will be on patrol from 3.30pm until 6pm on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays.

It is hoped the presence of the security guard will be a temporary measure, until the afternoons become lighter in the spring.

Colchester councillor Tim Young said: “It is disappointing a small minority want to disrupt activities at the library.

“This kind of antisocial behaviour needs nipping in the bud.”
