OVERFLOWING with contradictions, audiences at Colchester Folk Club are in for a treat on Monday when Maire Ni Chathasaigh and Chris Newman come to town.

The duo’s style of folk has been hailed as addictive “powerhouse Irish dance-music” with shots of hot jazz and bluegrass thrown in”.

Maire, pronounced Moira, was crowned Irish Traditional Musician of the Year 2001.

Growing up in West Cork, she began to play the harp when she was 11 and is now dubbed one of the greatest Celtic harpers of our age. Chris Newman started playing the guitar when he was four.

He is picked up a silver disc for producing the Oldest Swinger in Town and is now a prolific composer, arranger and record producer.

As a duo, Maire and Chris have made five albums, toured in 21 countries from the Shetland Islands to New Zealand and performed on television and radio on five continents.
