FUNDING of about £200,000 is set to go towards building a town square in front of Colchester’s new magistrates’ court.

Work on the feature, on part of the St Botolph’s car park, is expected to start soon.

Lyn Barton, councillor responsible for regeneration, planning and sustainability, said: “I’m interested in the public space this will create.

“We have got the funding, so work will start fairly quickly. It can only improve the area.”

She added other aspects of the regeneration of the area were forging ahead, with a planning application for a 90-bed hotel due to be submitted in the new year.

Colchester Council’s planning committee supported revised plans for the £30million courthouse earlier this month.

It is due to open in 2012.
