COLCHESTER’S car parks have won a top award for safety and cleanliness.

Eleven of the town centre’s car parks achieved the British Parking Association’s “park mark” award.

Assessors judged them on a range of criteria, including levels of surveillance, lighting, signs and cleanliness, all of which reduce the chances for crime.

Three and a half million people use the car parks each year, and it is the first time Colchester has received the award.

Tim Young, councillor responsible for street and waste services at Colchester Council, said: “We are very proud that so many of our car parks have been honoured with such a prestigious award.

“We are listening to what our customers need and responding with improved facilities.

“We are committed to maintaining community safety within our parking facilities and making sure our customers feel secure.

“These measures, in conjunction with our discounted parking schemes, make Colchester an even more attractive town to visit.”

The car parks which hit the standard are St Mary’s multi-storey, St John’s multi-storey, Vineyard Street, Priory Street, St Botolph’s, Britannia, Sheepen Road car park and lorry/coach/overspill car park, Prettygate, London Road (Lexden) and St Christopher’s.

Six car parks did not achieve the “park mark”.
