youngsters from the area will be raising awareness of World Aids Day tonight.

Schools and community groups will come together at the Mercury Theatre to stage the town’s 13th annual World Aids Day Arts Festival.

HIV and sexual health charity, Terrence Higgins Trust, and Colchester Borough Council will be on hand to support the students as they perform a range of dance, drama and music, aimed at raising awareness of HIV.

World Aids Day has been running every year since 1988, and is dedicated to raising awareness of the condition.

In the UK alone, 80,000 people are living with HIV and more than 7,500 are diagnosed every year.

Colchester Schools taking part include St Mary’s, Thomas Lord Audley, Philip Morant, the Harwich School, St Helena as well as Clacton County High School, New Rickstones Academy from Witham, the Plume School, in Maldon, Sudbury Upper School, and Hedingham School. They will be joined by Colchester Mercury Youth Theatre and Theatre Fun.

Tickets for the World Aids Day Arts Festival, which starts at 7.30pm, are priced £2.50.
