GOLD award-winning volunteers in Halstead will represent East Anglia in a national horticultural competition.

Halstead in Bloom will be up against five other towns of between 6,000 and 12,000 residents in the Britain in Bloom contest.

The town scooped a gold medal in the Anglia in Bloom competition in the summer. Julia Smith, secretary and a founding member, said: “For the team it means probably a lot more work and a bit more money.

“For the town it will be fantastic. There will be national coverage and that will benefit the traders.”

Mrs Smith said the Anglia in Bloom judges had praised Halstead for its consistently high standards at the feedback seminar in Norwich.

She said: “The Anglia in Bloom judges said to us ‘Just keep doing what you are doing. If you continue to do that, you will get silver gilt in Britain in Bloom’.”

Next year, Halstead will be judged by Anglia in Bloom as usual in July, and then in early August will be judged by the Britain in Bloom judges.

It hopes hard work, plus its chosen theme of 100 years of Guiding, will give the town a winning chance.
