BADLY-behaved soldiers helped to clear up a churchyard in Colchester.
Soldiers serving sentences at the Military Corrective Training Centre, in Berechurch Road, Colchester, joined the British Trust of Community Volunteers to spruce up the grounds of St Peter’s Church, on North Hill.
Colchester Council, which is responsible for looking after the land, is opening up the churchyard as a green “gateway” linking North Hill and the High Street.
In joint working parties, soldiers and volunteers trimmed trees, cut shrubs and cleared ivy.
A gateway linking the High Street to the churchyard through the former Essex and Suffolk Fire Office will be opened as part of the work.
The office, a Grade II-listed building, is being converted in to flats.
