MORE than 130 houng players have taken part in a football tournament to celebrate the life of a schoolboy who died two years ago.

Alexander Ramsdale-Launder was 13 when he died after his bicycle was in collision with a bus in Layer Road, Colchester, in November 2007.

Last year, his parents approached Scott Wade, his PE teacher at Stanway School, to ask about setting up a football tournament in Alexander’s memory.

The event was such a success it was repeated yesterday at Shrub End Sports Centre, in Boadicea Way. Mr Wade said: “Alexander was an avid Colchester United and Liverpool fan, and also played football for Lexden Reds. The tournament is a celebration of his life.”

The tournament was in two age groups – Year 7 (ages 11 and 12) and Year 11 (15 and 16).

St Helena B Team won the Year 7 tournament and were presented with a trophy and medals by Colchester United striker Clive Platt and Alexander’s mum, Natalie Launder.

The winning Year 11 team, Stanway B, received prizes from U’s record signing, Steven Gillespie.

As well as trophies, the winning teams will get a special bonus on Saturday November 14 – the chance to parade at half-time on the pitch at the Weston Homes Community Stadium during the U’s clash against Exeter City.
