A SWEET night of funky house at its finest will be heading to Essex University this weekend.

Hed Kandi is a popular visitor to these parts, with previous club nights at the university and Escape nightclub, in Copford. The UK-based record label and music brand was established in 1999 by Mark Doyle, specialising initially in commercial house music.

In 2006, it became part of the Ministry of Sound group, but continued to promote both artist albums and various genres of club compilations.

Now with a continuous roster of DJs and performers, as well as its very own club in Egypt’s Red Sea coastline resort of Hurghada city, Hed Kandi continues to tour the world.

Tomorrow, Sub Zero plays hosts to two Ibiza residents of Hed Kandi, DJ Sam Cannon, playing house music in its various forms from electro and beach, and percussionist Ian C.

From his early years of experimenting with every instrument under the sun, Sam Cannon always had a passion for music.

In 2005, Sam moved back to London to start working with Ministry of Sound, working with the compilation labels and tour nights Housexy and Clubbers Guide. A year later, he moved on to the events team for Hed Kandi, co-ordinating events in the UK and internationally.

Sam was then asked to join the Hed Kandi DJ team and, since then, has toured the world – DJing at clubs set in a cliff-face overlooking beautiful sunrises in Brazil and private birthday parties, alongside the likes of Mark Ronson.

With the summer season at Space, in Ibiza, behind him, Ian C continues to impress clubbers with his innovative approach to dance-orientated percussion at events and in studios around the world, from Colombia to Moscow to China.

Tickets are £8 for guests and £6 for students, available on the night, or in advance from www.essex student.com
