A SCHEME which makes use of empty shop buildings is in the running for a prestigious award and cash prize.
Slack Space Colchester was launched, in February, by a group of local artists, musicians and performers, keen to utilise vacant store space in the town centre.
In June, the group took over the former Roseby’s building, in Long Wyre Street, and turned it into an area which has since housed workshops, galleries, mini-festivals and performances.
The group has been nominated for a New Statesman Upstarts Award, which rewards social entrepreneurs who benefit the community. If the group wins, it will receive £5,000 for the project.
Abigail Cheverst, from Slack Space, said: “I think we have got an excellent chance of winning.
“The comments we have had from people have been amazing.
“You can tell the project has really touched lives and see how positive people feel about it.
“We have been operating on a shoestring budget, but if we win the award the money will allow us to continue. We could do some wonderful things with it.”
The result is expected to be announced within the next week.
