YOUNGSTERS from Clacton took part in the national Street Athletics event, organised by British Olympic star Linford Christie.
They qualified after Linford held heats, at Clacton’s Pier Avenue, in the summer.
About 200 runners took part in a series of 60-metre races, of which 18 lucky winners were selected for the finals, in Manchester.
The team met Linford and fellow organiser, former sprint athlete Darren Campbell, before competing against youngsters from other parts of the country.
Martin Avent and Les Nicoll, Essex Fire Service’s community safety officers, took the youngsters to the event.
Martin said: “It was a tremendous day out for the youngsters and their families.
“Nine of the Clacton team made it through to the semi-finals of their respective age groups, with three making the final. One of our young ladies came second in her final.
“We hope to bring the event back to Clacton in 2010, and to include youth street entertainers.
“The aim is to get young people to broaden their horizons in sport and other activities.”
