A GARDENER is going for gold in a contest to design a garden for the 2012 Olympics.

Rachel Read, from Layer-de-la-Haye, has reached the shortlist of six in the Royal Horticultural Society competition.

If she wins an online public vote, she will see her vision become reality in three years’ time at the Olympic Park, in Stratford.

Her design is for a flowerbed-bordered cinder running track, spiralling out from a central point, with plaques along the way listing every British gold medallist since 1908.

Mrs Read, who works as a gardener, but has no design experience, said she was thrilled.

The 38-year-old said: “It is brilliant to get this far and obviously to actually win it would be fantastic.”
