A NATIONAL supermarket chain that has brought almost 300 jobs to the town opens its doors in Colchester today at 8am.

Waitrose had to close its recruitment process for its new Ipswich Road store a week early after more than 1,600 people applied.

The store, at the former Glyn Webb store, on the corner of St Andrew’s Avenue, is set to be the company’s biggest food store in the country.

The 3,500 sq ft store has been modified and revamped ready for the opening.

The company has already pledged its commitment to the town with its backing of the recent Colchester Carnival.

Waitrose, part of the John Lewis Partnership, is owned by everyone who works for it.
