JUST like their namesake the Chameleon’s Web Theatre Company can adapt to any play.

Following the Colchester troupe’s success with Educating Rita, in May, they are about to put on another modern classic, Hannie Rayson’s Life After George.

Written seven years ago, the play is the story of three women, three marriages and one husband; Peter George, charismatic, radical, academic, idealist, lover of life, and dead.

As his wife, two ex-wives and daughter gather for his funeral, the true nature of the man and his life unfolds, and the women discover much about themselves and the lives they lived both within and outside his shadow.

Recognised as one of Australia’s most significant playwrights, Hannie Rayson’s first major success was Hotel Sorrento, which won several prizes, including the Australian Writers’ Guild Award. Her more recent works include Falling from Grace, Competitive Tenderness, Life After George and the Glass Soldier.

Rayson’s commitment to plays that engage with social issues was most evident in her 2005 work Two Brothers, an attack on the hardline asylum seeker policy of Australia’s conservative Howard government, which provoked bitter controversy.

Life After George had its West End debut in February 2002 after breaking all box office records in Australia.

Chameleon’s Web Theatre Company’s cast includes Malcolm Kimmance as George, with Sara Green, Sue Murtagh and Sally Parkinson as his three wives. Two regular Chameleon’s Web actors complete the cast, with Colin Downer playing George’s best mate, Duffy, and Heidi Mussett playing George’s Daughter, Ana.

Life After George runs at the Headgate Theatre, Chapel Street North, Colchester, from Wednesday, until September 26 at 7.45pm. Tickets are £8.50 and £6.50 for concessions, available from the Headgate Theatre box office on 01206 366000.
