WHAT better way to enjoy talented local musicians at this time of year than sitting in the shady garden of the Minories on a summer’s evening?

Friday’s one-off garden gig at the Colchester High Street art gallery brings together a host of artists for a charity night which also includes a barbecue, raffle and pub quiz.

Organised by Laura Wyatt, 20, from Nayland, the event is in aid of the charity, Frontier, with which Laura will soon be working in the Cambodian rainforest.

Laura, singer and saxophonist with Vardo and the Boss, says the gig was the perfect way to combine music and fundraising.

The band combines Laura’s sax and vocals with guitar, keyboards, cello and drums, to create a funky and soulful sound, with upbeat danceable songs.

The evening also features music from other artists, including Paul Wood, Josh Sandifer and 17-year-old Colchester Institute music student Gabriella Eva.

Gabriella writes and sings her own songs and is a regular on the Colchester gig scene. She has been recording more music and shooting a promo video this summer.

More local music will be available to people at the gig, in the form of a compilation CD, commissioned specially for the night and on sale exclusively on the evening.

The CD features regular performers from Colchester, and the surrounding area, including Jazmine Ava and Newton King.

A raffle will be held, with prizes including tickets for Indikart racing and local nightclubs.

The live music starts at 6.30pm and will continue late into the night, as the sun goes down.

Tickets are £4 and available from Lauren Francis, on 07852 588028. Subject to availability, there will also be admission on the night.

The event is being promoted as a gig for all, a family night, with under-14s allowed in free.
