SAFETY campaigners have moved a step closer to victory in their bid to have a zebra crossing installed outside a primary school.

Parents at Coppins Green, in Clacton, campaigned for a new crossing in nearby London Road after nine-year-old pupil Jacob Konikowski was involved in a collision outside the school.

Jacob suffered serious head injuries and spent two weeks in hospital following the accident, but looks set to make a full recovery.

Highways bosses have agreed to look at traffic flows to see if a crossing is needed.

Parent Kate Trigg, who led calls for a new crossing, is unhappy the the survey will not be undertaken until September when children, including her sons Tyler White, 10, and Harry, four, will have already returned to school.

She said: “They should do the traffic survey in the holidays when people are crossing the road all the time, instead of on a week day when all the children are at school.” Ms Trigg added their campaign had made people aware of the dangers of the road.

She said: “It it quite a relief, but it has been a long time coming.

“There should have been a crossing put in years ago.

“Instead a little boy has had to be hurt for them to even consider it.”

Michael Page, a spokesman for Essex County Council, said: “Essex County Council has received a request for a new crossing on London Road, in Clacton, near Coppins Green Primary School, and we are considering the information received and conducting our own investigation.

“A traffic survey will be carried out on the road, but in order to get an accurate picture of the situation, it will be necessary to do this during the autumn term, rather than in the summer holiday.”
