MORE than 80 young people have so far signed up for the Harwich area’s first cardiac screening session.

The event, at Harwich and Parkeston Football Club, in Main Road, Dovercourt, is being funded by the Marcus Armstrong Memorial Fund.

Marcus died suddenly of an undetected heart condition in May 2006, aged 28. The fund was set up in an effort to help avoid similar tragedies.

His parents, Tony and Jackie Armstrong, have since received phenomenal support and so far, more than £20,000 has been raised.

The screening is being organised by the group, Cardiac Risk in the Young which runs mobile screening session in community and sports clubs around the UK.

Mr Armstrong said: “We want young people to take up these places to ensure they have the opportunity to have any problem diagnosed before it is too late.”

There are still 50 places remaining at the first event, on August 1.

It is open to anyone aged between 14 and 35 and invitations have been sent to members of Harwich and Parkeston Football Club, Harwich and Dovercourt golf and cricket clubs, Little Oakley Football Club and other groups.
