BOBBIES on their bicycles will be out in force this summer.

Throughout July and August, Operation Velo will see an increase in the number of police taking to the county’s streets on their bikes.

The operation was launched in Chelmsford town centre yesterday by Deputy Chief Constable Andy Bliss.

He said: “By returning to the bike patrols of 40 or 50 years ago, we are giving the people what they want, more visible policing.

“Our bike patrols will have such a positive impact on policing. Local officers will be more accessible, and using bicycles helps us reduce crime and antisocial behaviour – and our carbon footprint.

“Officers will be able to respond to incidents more quickly than if they were on foot and access places police cars cannot get to.”
