HEALTH bosses are celebrating after getting the go ahead for a new dialysis unit in Clacton.

The centre will be able to treat almost 70 kidney disease patients so people won’t have to make the 30-mile round trip to Colchester three times a week for dialysis.

The unit should be up and running by next spring after council planners gave it the thumbs-up.

Pat Harvey, of NHS North East Essex, said it was “excellent” news.

“As 70 per cent of our current renal dialysis patients live in the Tendring area – the majority of those in Clacton – Clacton was the obvious choice,” she said.

The centre will be based in the health service’s Kennedy House offices in Kennedy Way which has plenty of patient parking.

The renal outpatients’ clinic at Clacton Hospital will also move to the new site.

Janice Rowe, of Ipswich Road, Holland on Sea, spearheaded the drive for a renal unit in Clacton.

“It’s very good news – we were wondering if it was going to get passed.”
