A NINE-year-old boy is in a serious condition in hospital after he was involved in an accident with a car outside a primary school.

The boy suffered head and pelvic injuries and was left unconscious by the collision with a black Peugeot 206 in London Road, Clacton, close to the etnrance of Coppins Green Primary School.

He was airlifted to Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge, where his condition remains serious but stable.

Witness Derek Howard said: “There was a group of youngsters going to cross the road. They had a ball, I think they had come out of the park.

“This youngster, I reckon he was the last one and tried to follow them.

“I heard a bang. I turned around. He was lying in the road. Then people came to help.”

Lollipop lady, Sarah Archer said: “I went out there to keep the traffic away so the emergency vehicles could get here.

“People have been campaigning for years to get a crossing. It is not the first time it has happened, and not the first time it has happened there.”

Joy Hale, East of England Ambulance Service spokeswoman, said it received an emergency call at 5.42pm on Monday.

“We had a response car there in about three minutes, we also had a local manager, crew and the air ambulance.

“He was a nine-year-old boy from the Clacton area and had suffered cuts and bruises, but because of the way he was reacting to treatment, it was thought he had a head injury.”

It is not known if he is a pupil at the school.

The car was being driven by a 26-year-old Harwich woman.

No one was arrested.

Nicola Bastendorff, Essex Police spokeswoman, said the road was closed for one hour and traffic was diverted.
