ROGUE drivers have been targeted in a police crackdown.

Officers from a dog unit worked with the automatic number plate reader team and Clacton’s neighbourhood police to catch offenders.

Essex County Council’s road safety team was also on hand to issue advice and guidance.

A total of 63 drivers were given a £30 fine for not wearing a seatbelt or for driving down Pier Avenue between 10am and 4pm, when only buses, taxis and delivery vehicles are allowed.

One car with no insurance was seized, and two people were reported for driving with only provisional licenses.

The day was part of Operation Lampoon, which will be continuing throughout the summer.

PCSO Chris Lloyd said: “We are extremely keen to show motorists using mobile phones, not wearing seat belts and driving above the legal alcohol limit is not acceptable.

“We want Clacton’s roads to be safe for residents and holidaymakers alike.”
