A CLACTON man has become the first person in north Essex to fall victim to swine flu.

The man, who has not been named by NHS North East Essex, is believed to have just returned from Mexico and has tested positive for the virus.

Mike Gogarty, director of public health, said: “He has been given antivirals and is responding well to treatment in his own home.”

Dr Gogarty added the local NHS already has plans in place to tackle swine flu.

He said: “There are simple steps that everyone can take to help prevent catching colds and flu, based on good respiratory and hand hygiene.

“Always use a tissue to catch your sneezes, throw away used tissues where germs can linger and regularly wash your hands.

“If people are concerned because they have been to Mexico, or other affected areas, and are developing influenza-like symptoms, don’t go to your GP.

“Stay at home, call your GP or contact NHS Direct on 0845 46 47 or via the web at www.nhs.uk”

Four new cases of swine flu have been confirmed by the Department of Health, bringing the total to 32 cases in the UK.
