A YOUNG jockey who was seriously injured in a riding accident has got back on a horse for the first time.

There were fears for Rosie Chinery, an Olympic hopeful in point-to-point racing, when she was crushed under her horse.

The 18-year-old was rushed into Addenrooke’s Hospital, in Cambridge, in a coma, but Rosie has made a dramatic recovery which, her grandfather Aubrey Chinery says, is one of the best doctors have ever seen.

Mr Chinery, of Great Yeldham, said Rosie is back at home with her parents in Toppesfield, near Halstead.

The former Hedingham School pupil is horse-mad and has been vowing to get back in the saddle since she started speaking in early April.

Despite breaking her neck and suffering a mini stroke, she is recovering and has had to learn how to walk from scratch.

Her grandfather said: “Rosie is doing great. She can’t walk straight but she is walking quite nicely really, for what she went through.”

He said she tried out a trot and a little canter on an old, grey pony belonging to friends in Colchester this week to see how her balance was.

He added: “She is determined and young – she was fit. I think she has grown a bit too, laying there all that time, she has stretched.”
