A GROUP of history enthusiasts open their attractions and exhibitions for the 40th season today.

The Harwich Society began after a history exhibition based on King George was held in the town.

It was organised by Len Weaver, a historian and former town council archivist who lives in Dovercourt.

Now, 40 years on, it has scores of volunteers and more than a 1,000 members. Andy Rutter, current secretary and one of the founding members, said: “The exhibition was extremely popular and people wanted more. They called a public meeting in the town hall and the society was formed.”

A total of 62 people signed up to the society on that first day. It was formed as it is today after inspiration from a similar group in Saffron Walden, where all the members had specialist subjects.

Today, the Harwich Society looks after four historic buildings and a nature reserve, as well as offering a number of other services to the town.

Mr Rutter said: “All these different buildings and places have their own team of volunteers, which are all quite separate from each other.”

Chairman Bernie Sadler said the members were pleased to see the society reach such a landmark anniversary.

There are also more than 1,700 people from across the town, county and even internationally who are members of the society.

Members have monthly meetings with guest speakers and social events.

But volunteers are needed to ensure every brick on every building is kept in good condition.
