THOSE that say there is little evening entertainment in Witham have obviously never been to Capitol Square.

The Freebournes industrial estate turns from a business hub by day into the place to be at night, especially on the first Thursday of every month.

Capitol Square in Perry Way is not only home to snooker tables and a bowling alley but the venue has played host to Witham’s Comedy Club for the past year.

Three top UK comedians perform for a packed house, but it is not just the comedy that keeps the audience happy.

John Tucker and Helen Mortiboy, who run Capitol Square, put a lot of effort into ensuring an evening at the Comedy Club provides good value for money.

The venue has recently undergone a major refurbishment, doubling the show capacity, and a team of helpful waitresses provide table service through the night.

Doors open at 7pm and the shows start at 9pm. There is also an all-you-can-eat hot buffet for £4.50.

Miss Mortiboy said: “We were holding the comedy nights in the smaller front room, as we had 18 snooker tables in the back.

“But we decided our 18 tables were too many and we swapped it round, so we now have a bigger function room for comedy and other events and snooker in the front bar area.”

There are plans to put the extra space to use by putting on gigs and variety nights.

Keen to find out what really goes on at a Comedy Club, night I joined about 70 other people when Miles Crawford, Mandy Muden and Adam Crow were the three comics in town. And they didn’t disappoint.

The next show takes place on May 7 and will feature Padraig Hyland, Harvey Oliver and Nick Revell. Tickets are £12 (£10 for members) and doors open at 7pm. Call 01376 517277 for more information.
