WORK to tame Colchester’s town centre traffic problems continue to cause major congestion.

Queues of cars formed along Cowdray Avenue, Westway, and up Balkerne Hill yesterday afternoon.

The congestion was caused by the over-running roadworks at the Albert roundabout.

Zebra crossings on Cowdray Avenue and Colne Bank Avenue are being replaced with traffic light-controlled toucan crossings, which it is hoped will cause less disruption to traffic flow.

The work was due to be finished at the end of March, but is still causing disruption.

Town MP Bob Russell said: “We must be up to double figures for what was supposed to be a four-week project.

“We all know that the school run is the biggest cause of congestion and schools are off this week, so who knows what it’ll be like next week.”

County council spokesman Scott Wilson apologised for the delay, caused by cold weather earlier in the year, and said engineers were working as quickly as possible.
