THE problem of speeding motorists is set to be tackled by a group of village residents.

Forty volunteers in Coggeshall are due to be trained in the use of speed guns, after years of concern about cars driving too fast in the area.

Parish councillor Tina Sivyer said the problem became apparent when she started walking her children to school along West Street, where she lives.

“You have to walk along very narrow pavements at peak times,” said the mother-of-three, who has lived in the village for seven years.

“Cars thunder along the road, as well as a lot of heavy traffic.

“It scares the children – they flatten themselves against the wall when the huge ones come past.”

She said the problem was prevalent throughout the village, as well as in neighbouring Coggeshall Hamlet, where there are areas without any pavements.

Mrs Sivyer has set up a speeding sub-committee on the parish council, and arranged a training session with Essex Police on the use of speed guns.

“I handed around some flyers asking for volunteers and soon had 40 people on board,” she said.

“I’m thrilled that so many people are getting involved – but it also brings home how much of a problem there is.

“It’s a huge issue.”
